Corrections

Every factual statement on this site came from a named source on a named date. That makes errors findable — and it makes them our responsibility to fix.

What counts as a correction

Anything we have got wrong: a fact, a name, a date, an address, a link that now goes somewhere else, a photograph credited to the wrong person or showing the wrong place. Also anything we have implied by omission — if a page makes your business or your organisation look like something it is not, that is our problem to fix, not yours to live with.

What we do with one

  1. We go back to the source. Every claim on this site records where it came from and when it was checked, so the first step is re-reading that source rather than arguing from memory.
  2. We correct the record, not just the page. The site is generated from a research library, so a fix is made once in the library and reaches every page that used it.
  3. We re-date it. A corrected claim carries a new verification date, so you can see it was looked at again.
  4. We say so where it matters. If we published something materially wrong, the page says what changed rather than quietly editing it away.

If you run a business or organisation we describe

We only publish what an organisation says about itself, what an independent source establishes, or what a public record shows — and we say which is which. We do not invent reviews, rankings or awards, and we do not publish opening hours or prices, because those go out of date faster than any website can keep up. If your own site has moved, or the page we linked is no longer the right one, telling us is the quickest fix.

Photographs

Every image here is used under a licence that permits it, and the image credits page lists creator, licence and placement for all of them. If you took one of these photographs and the credit is wrong, or you would rather it were not used, tell us and we will correct or remove it.

Where to write

This is a working prototype and no public address has been set yet. Before the guide is published this section will carry a monitored address, and that address is a condition of launch rather than a nicety — a guide that invites checking has to be reachable by the people doing the checking.
