Charlotte greenway parking: 75 county-mapped access points

The tables below list 75 public, active access-point records marked for parking in Mecklenburg County's Sep 29, 2026 downloadable data, checked on Oct 3, 2026. They match the entrances in the Handbook greenway map. The count describes mapped records; it does not guarantee an open gate, an empty space or an uninterrupted trail today.

For a first decision, use the examples below: a short Six Mile Creek out-and-back, a south-Charlotte McAlpine segment, an urban history walk, a daylight Davidson outing, or a Matthews start with operator-listed restrooms. Then use the full tables to compare other entrances.

Before you drive: five decisions

• Pick the actual parking entrance. Locate the address on the official county map. A park's office address may differ from its trail entrance. Do not substitute a nearby business or residential street for designated parking.

• Pick an outward route and a turnaround. Include the walk from the car, access connectors, crossings and the return. A named trail's total mileage is not automatically your outing's distance. For a flexible one-mile walk, measuring half a mile from your start and returning is a planning choice, not a surveyed route in this guide.

• Check the correct operator and hours. Davidson and Matthews do not state the same trail hours. A park used for parking can close earlier than the trail it reaches. Read the specific facility page and posted signs.

• Read the latest relevant project update. Start with County facility notices and the greenway project board, then follow through to dated project information. An old forecast or an undated item on a current web page does not prove today's closure status.

• Confirm the things your visit depends on. For an accessible parking space, step-free route, accessible restroom, coach space or gate schedule, ask about that entrance specifically. County inquiries: Park and Recreation; Matthews: 704-321-7275; Davidson: 704-892-3349. Follow barriers and signs when you arrive.

Choose a starting point

Use an entrance address, then decide the direction and turnaround of your walk. The five starting-point plans below distinguish the mapped trail from the parking-to-trail approach; their distances are not promises of a particular car-door itinerary.

Six Mile Creek at Marvin Road

Start: 17820 Marvin Road, Charlotte, NC 28277. The September 29 County entrance record marks this Public, Active and Parking.

Suggested plan: Follow the Six Mile Creek trail and return the same way, turning back earlier if needed. The county greenway listing describes about 0.9 miles here, so roughly 1.8 miles out and back is a planning estimate before any extra movement in the lot. Calculation: 0.9 × 2.

Know what the numbers mean: The page's 0.82 is the main mapped Greenway total; the September 29, 2026 package additionally contains about 0.09 miles classified as an entrance connector. This helps explain the 0.9-mile operator description. Neither number is a measured car-door itinerary.

Check before leaving: Gate hours, restroom availability and the parking-to-trail connection if you need step-free access. Do not present the page's “48% wood” as 48% of this walk; it counts segments. No current entrance-specific operational inspection was completed for this review.

McAlpine from Highway 51 to Johnston Road

Start: 6810 Pineville-Matthews Road, Charlotte, NC 28226. Alternative trailhead: 11823 Johnston Road, Charlotte, NC 28226.

Suggested plan: Take the McAlpine extension toward the other trailhead and return, if the relevant segment is open. The county project describes 1.1 miles, giving a nominal 2.2-mile out-and-back before extra approaches. Calculation: 1.1 × 2.

Date-sensitive constraint: The extension page's May 21, 2026 update confirms the Highway 51 lot opened. Separately, the Charlotte Water project warns of intermittent closures/detours, with its Jul 24, 2026 update giving a summer 2027 completion forecast. Its specific July flooding closure is not verified as still active today. Check the newest project notice before choosing this outing.

Navigation note: The Johnston entrance appears under Four Mile Creek in the directory. That classification does not prevent it serving McAlpine, as the project page explicitly explains.

Elizabeth Park and the Trail of History

Start: County entrance address 1110 Elizabeth Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28204, recorded as Elizabeth Neighborhood Park. Select the actual entrance pin rather than navigating only to “Little Sugar Creek.”

Suggested plan: Join the Little Sugar Creek pedestrian corridor and walk toward Morehead Street, returning by the same route. The Trail of History's own visitor page defines its corridor along Kings Drive between 7th and Morehead Streets and lists Elizabeth and Thompson Park parking. Choose a statue or measured-distance turnaround rather than treating the directory's 16.38 network miles as the length of this visit.

Distance definition: No authoritative car-park-to-turnaround mileage was established in this review. A half-mile outward/half-mile return is a one-mile self-measured plan, not a published Trail of History distance.

Check before leaving: The Trail of History visitor page states dawn-to-dusk parking for its listed lots. The county closure board also retains an undated Midtown construction/detour item; it is a reason to check the present route, not proof that a particular old detour remains in force. Extra walking to see more statues and any detour add distance.

River Run Athletic Park in Davidson

Start: 13007 Robert Walker Drive, Davidson, NC 28036. Both the September 29 County entrance package and the Town's Winter 2025 map, p. 6 identify parking here.

Suggested plan: Use the mapped Robert Walker Drive urban-trail connection west to South Prong Rocky River Greenway and choose a turnaround before leaving. The map currently linked by the Town, page 2, distinguishes that connection from the greenway itself and shows crossings. It is not a wholly creekside start.

Distance definition: The Winter 2025 map labels the South Prong greenway at 1.2 miles; that is not a mileage from this parking space. For a modest outing, measure half a mile from your actual starting point and return for roughly one mile. Do not double the entire trail label and call that the River Run round trip.

Operating limit: Davidson's greenway rules state sunrise to sunset. Allow enough time to return; verify current signs and any route changes. Accessible stall dimensions, curb transitions and grades were not verified.

Squirrel Lake Park in Matthews

Start: 1631 Pleasant Plains Road, Matthews, NC 28105. This address matches the county parking record and Squirrel Lake Park's official facility page.

Suggested plan: Take the park's connector to Four Mile Creek Greenway. Use the Town map to choose the Four Mile Creek direction toward downtown Matthews, then return at your chosen point. The Town lists restrooms, parking and a connector trail at this park. Those are useful confirmed facilities; their availability and accessibility on your visit still need checking if essential.

Distance definition: The Town's Four Mile Creek page describes 2 miles of paved trail, while county and Handbook totals cover different segment groupings. None is a verified Squirrel Lake parking-to-turnaround distance. A half-mile from the car and back gives a flexible one-mile measured outing, including whatever portion of the connector you actually use.

Important hours distinction: Squirrel Lake Park is dawn to dusk. The Town's all-times-except-floods/repairs rule for Four Mile trail does not make this park an all-night parking option.

If accessibility determines the choice: Ask Matthews whether the particular parking bay, connector, proposed turnaround and restroom form a usable step-free route for your needs. This card should not carry an “ADA accessible” badge merely because the main trail is paved.

Greenways with recorded parking

Surface percentages are the share of mapped segment records, not the percentage of a walk or of total trail distance. Short and long segments count equally. Use the map to inspect the surface on your planned route. Mileage totals combine active Greenway and Urban Trail records under that name and exclude separately classified access connectors, crossings and overlooks.

An address identifies a County-recorded access point and can differ from a park office address. The data does not establish parking charges, available spaces, gate operation or an accessible connection. Check the operator’s instructions and the signs at the actual lot. Paving alone does not establish a step-free route; grades, curb transitions, surface condition and obstructions matter too.

Four Mile Creek Greenway

The County describes a Matthews section and additional sections within the Lower McAlpine/McMullen network. Select the correct section on the official map before assuming that two same-name entrances form one continuous outing.

Matthews also lists its Community Center and Council Place Drive/John Street as parking options. These are separate from the County’s 75 parking-classified records; confirm entrance restrictions and current access with the Town. Town Four Mile Creek guidance

Current rules and shared trail use

Mecklenburg Park and Recreation announced a 20 mph speed limit across the County greenway system on September 23, 2026. Follow posted restrictions and slow around other users. That limit alone does not establish whether a particular powered device is allowed. Check the rules for the operator and device you plan to use. County announcement

For town-operated sections, use the town’s current guidance. Matthews’ E-Bike and E-Moto Safety page distinguishes bicycles/e-bikes, personal conveyance vehicles and mopeds or motorcycles, and explains where each may be used. Davidson publishes its greenway rules. A permitted trail activity does not extend a park lot’s opening hours.

Keep right, pass on the left with an audible warning, slow near pedestrians and keep dogs on a leash no longer than six feet. Clean up after pets. At road crossings, obey the signs and signals and confirm traffic has stopped before entering. For emergencies, call 911 and give the greenway name plus the closest mile marker or exit address. After rain or during construction

A mapped parking entrance can lead to a flooded or closed trail. Check County facility notices, the greenway project board and any route-specific town or utility notice. Read the date and affected section. An old completion estimate or an empty notice list does not establish that your route is open today.

Follow barriers and detours. If water covers the route, turn back rather than entering it; Charlotte’s flood-safety guidance warns against entering floodwater. Have another destination in mind when weather or works may affect the visit.

What still needs checking

The inventory comes from dated mapping records. Space counts, parking restrictions, gate operation and accessible connections have not been checked for every entrance. Use the official County map to identify the entrance and Park and Recreation for entrance-specific questions. Ask the town where it operates the facility. No contact page promises live lot-capacity information.

If your chosen lot is full or closed, use another lawful, designated entrance that fits a revised route, or change destinations. Do not assume a nearby street or business permits parking.
