Two free museum nights, both on a Wednesday

This is the single most useful thing on this page, and Charlotte has arranged it conveniently: the Mint Museum and the Bechtler both open free on Wednesday evenings from 5 to 9 PM, and they are a three-minute walk apart on South Tryon Street.

The Mint opens both its sites free on Wednesday evening — Uptown on South Tryon and Randolph out on Randolph Road — with both running 11 AM to 9 PM that day.

If you have children, you never need to wait for Wednesday. The Mint admits everyone aged 18 and under free at any time, and the Bechtler admits children 10 and under free. The Bechtler also admits military members free.

Free guided tours, every Thursday lunchtime, rotating

ArtBreak is the best-kept free thing in Uptown. A 30-minute guided tour at 12:00, on alternating Thursdays, rotating around four museums:

"No admission or registration is required. Just drop in." Which means that on a first Thursday you can walk into the Gantt Center at lunchtime for nothing, on a day when it otherwise charges.

Check the museums' own calendars for the date before you go — the rotation is settled, the individual dates are not.

A gallery that is free every day it is open

McColl Center, 721 N. Tryon Street, is not a ticketed museum: admission is complimentary, with a $10 suggested donation. It is a working artist residency with galleries, so the hours are narrower than a museum's — Friday afternoons and Saturdays, with the rest of the week by appointment — and worth checking before you walk up.

Art you do not need to go indoors for

Mecklenburg County's public art register lists 242 works, and 133 of the Charlotte ones are outdoors — sculptures, murals, light works, artist-designed bus shelters, a gate, a streetscape. They are free by their nature and most of them are on a street you could be walking down anyway.

The Trail of History along Little Sugar Creek Greenway is a run of bronze sculptures of figures from the county's history — a free walk that is also a free gallery. See the Trail of History walk.

Parks, greenways and water play

All free, all the time.

• Greenways. The county maps 422 access points across the system. The trail itself is open at all times except during floods or repairs; the car parks are dawn to dusk, which catches people out. See where to park for a greenway walk.
• Playgrounds. The county records a playground at 148 parks.
• Spraygrounds. Ten of them, including First Ward Park and Romare Bearden Park Uptown, both of which have no car park — they are meant to be walked to. Water play is seasonal, so check before you travel. See playgrounds and water play.
• Dog parks. Fifteen across the county, free, open 7:30 a.m. to sunset — later than the parks around them. See dog parks.

Libraries, which are more than libraries

Charlotte Mecklenburg Library runs 23 locations. ImaginOn on East Seventh Street is a joint library and children's theatre building and is free to walk into. Main Library on North Tryon is closed for construction — check the library's locations page before setting out for a specific branch.

Walks that cost nothing

• The Fourth Ward historic district walk — Victorian streets in Uptown.
• The Uptown architecture walk.
• Charlotte's cemeteries — Elmwood and Pinewood among them, and more history per acre than most museums.
• Any of the thirteen greenway and neighbourhood routes.

Free, but you will have to drive

Two of the best are outside Mecklenburg County, and we label them plainly rather than passing them off as Charlotte.

Reed Gold Mine, Midland, Cabarrus County — the site of the first documented gold find in the United States. Admission is free; guided mine tours and gold panning are charged separately. Open Tuesday to Saturday.

Schiele Museum of Natural History, Gastonia, Gaston County — free to everyone on the second Tuesday of each month between 4 and 8 PM, under a long-running arrangement sponsored by Duke Energy. No booking needed. Planetarium shows are charged separately.

Places that charge

So you are not caught out: the Harvey B. Gantt Center, the Charlotte Museum of History, and the NASCAR Hall of Fame all charge for admission — though the Gantt is free to drop into for the lunchtime ArtBreak tour on first Thursdays, above. The Charlotte Museum of History admits children under four and members free. The Gantt Center admits members and under-fives free.

We have not yet checked Discovery Place, Historic Rosedale or Daniel Stowe Conservancy. That means we do not know, not that they charge.
