The Mint Museum states Mint Museum Randolph is located in what was the original branch of the United States Mint and opened in 1936 in Eastover as North Carolina’s first art museum. Its own timeline records that the U.S. Assay office closed permanently in 1913; that after a 1914 remodelling the building served variously as a federal courthouse, wartime Red Cross headquarters, army office and recruiting office, employment bureau, American Legion headquarters, temporary U.S. Customs office, prohibition headquarters and a meeting place for the Charlotte Woman’s Club and other organisations between 1915 and 1930.

The Mint Museum states that in 1930 a planned expansion of the U.S. Post Office on the adjoining lot threatened the building with demolition, that community protests stalled it for three years, and that in 1933 Mary Myers Dwelle led a small group of citizens to save the building and establish an art museum - with funding from the North Carolina Civil Works Administration, the Federal Emergency Relief Administration and the Works Progress Administration for the relocation and reconstruction of the historic building.
