Start with the visit you want

• For craft, design and American art, start at Mint Museum Uptown.
• For a focused modern-art visit, choose the Bechtler and check which works are on view.
• For African-American art and culture, start with the Gantt's exhibitions and program calendar.
• For a performance, choose a dated Knight Theater show first and fit a museum visit around it.
• For a lower-cost museum evening, look at Wednesday after 5 pm. See the admission boundaries below before planning the whole night as free.

Mint Museum Uptown

The Mint's Craft + Design collection gives you glass, ceramics, furniture, jewelry and other objects to look at as both art and design. Uptown also has American art galleries, so it suits a visit that moves between objects and paintings. Check the Craft + Design collection, American art collection and current exhibitions before choosing your route through the museum.

Mint Museum Randolph is a separate destination at 2730 Randolph Road in Eastover. Do not add it to this South Tryon walking circuit by mistake. Mint visitor information covers both buildings.

Bechtler Museum of Modern Art

420 South Tryon Street

Come for modern art and Mario Botta's distinctive terracotta-clad building. The collection grew from Bessie and Hans Bechtler's family collection, begun in Zurich in the 1950s; Andreas Bechtler and his family later gave their portion to the museum. Exhibitions change, and a work belonging to the collection may not be on display. If a particular artist is the reason for your trip, check what is on view first. Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture

551 South Tryon Street

The Gantt combines visual art with programs in film, music, dance, literature and other cultural forms. Choose it for an exhibition visit, or plan around a specific talk, screening or performance. Its building also gives the visit a local context: the Gantt stands in the area of Charlotte's former Brooklyn neighborhood, and its design draws on the neighborhood's Myers Street School. Knight Theater

Knight Theater is the performance stop in this group. Blumenthal's Knight Theater page lists upcoming shows, seating, parking and assistance information. Choose the date and performance, then check its ticket requirements; a museum admission does not book a theater seat. Knight and the Bechtler share lobby space, but that does not make their tickets interchangeable.

Wednesday evenings: what is free

Wednesday Night Live offers free museum admission from 5–9 pm every Wednesday at the Bechtler, Gantt and Mint Museum Uptown. This is an evening window, not an all-day free-admission promise.

Check your chosen museum and any event listing for that date. A free gallery visit should not be read as a promise that every concert, workshop or special exhibition is included. The Gantt explicitly separates general admission from ticketed events and special exhibitions. Knight Theater shows have their own arrangements.

At the Mint, Wednesday evening visitors do not need advance general-admission tickets. For a program with a registration button, follow that program's instructions even when its stated price is free. Leave time to enjoy one or two museums rather than treating all three as a checklist.

Tickets and opening days

As checked October 4, 2026, standard adult admission is $15 plus admission tax at the Mint, $10 at the Bechtler and $10 at the Gantt. Discounts and free-entry age bands differ: use each institution's own Mint, Bechtler or Gantt admission page for your group. Special events may have separate prices.

A Mint general-admission ticket covers Uptown and Randolph for two consecutive days, starting when you check in. That gives you a way to visit Randolph separately without squeezing it into the campus outing. Keep your receipt for re-entry. Mint ticket details.

Opening days and holiday closures vary. Mint and Gantt ordinarily close on Monday; the Bechtler closes on Tuesday. Check all the museums you intend to enter before leaving, and check the performance time separately if you are going to Knight Theater.

Parking and access

The Levine Center for the Arts garage is entered from West Brooklyn Village Avenue. Follow your institution's directions and ask its admission team about validation before returning to the car. Garage space can fill; free museum admission does not mean free parking.

• Mint's parking information currently lists a $10 maximum with validation before 5 pm Monday–Friday, and a $10 flat fee after 5 pm and on weekends.
• Bechtler's parking information offers a $10-off validation coupon for the Levine garage or The Green garage. A coupon amount is not a quoted final parking bill.
• Gantt's directions and parking page tells visitors to request a discounted pass from its Visitor Experience team; it does not state the discounted total.
• Knight Theater's venue page gives the terms for its patrons' parking rate. If you park early for a museum before a show, check those arrival-time conditions rather than assuming the evening rate applies.

For step-free access, plan by building. The Mint's accessibility guide identifies accessible garage spaces on P1 and P2, elevators to all floors and an Uptown drop-off near its elevator on Levine Avenue of the Arts. The Gantt's access page says wheelchairs are available and asks visitors to contact staff for special arrangements. The Bechtler’s accessibility page describes wheelchair access throughout its public areas and elevators, complimentary wheelchairs, and free admission for visitors with disabilities and their companions. For Knight Theater, request patron assistance in advance when possible. Confirm the arrangements you need with each stop; shared campus proximity is not an access assessment of the route between them.

Two ways to combine the stops

These are suggested ways to structure a visit, not timed tours or booking guarantees.

• Museum-led afternoon: choose the Mint, Bechtler or Gantt as your main stop. Look at a second museum's exhibition list before deciding whether to add it. If Randolph is your priority, plan it as a separate journey rather than another campus doorway.
• Museum plus show: choose your Knight Theater performance first, then work backward from curtain time. Check the museum's closing time, allow time to move between buildings and find your seat, and keep the museum and theater ticket confirmations separate. For a Wednesday gallery outing without a show, use the 5–9 pm window and pick the exhibitions that interest you most.

Why these museums are here

The Mint's story predates this Uptown campus. It opened in 1936 as North Carolina's first art museum, in the former United States branch-mint building now at Randolph. Mary Myers Dwelle led the campaign to save it; public funding helped relocate and reconstruct the building between 1933 and 1936. The Mint's own history explains that transformation from mint building to art museum.

The Bechtler opened in 2010. Its collection and Botta building make a different kind of story: a family's long engagement with modern artists became a public museum. The Gantt brings African-American art, history and culture to the same campus, while Knight Theater adds live performance. The appeal of visiting together is the variety; choose the combination that matches your interests.
