Charlotte Douglas: everything except the flight

We have not printed a single parking rate. They change, the airport publishes them per product, and a number here would be wrong within months. What is here instead are the rules, which do not change.

Parking

The thing that saves people money

When an airport sign or the website shows a facility as "Booked" or "Reservation Only", it is not full. CLT states plainly that it means the drive-up spaces are gone — but if you booked online, you still get in. Drivers who see that and peel off to a more expensive option are paying for a misunderstanding.

The nine options

Covered: Valet, the Hourly Deck, the Daily Decks, Express Deck Preferred, Express Deck Self-Park. Uncovered: the Daily North Lot, Long Term Lot 1, Long Term Lot 2. Free: the Cell Phone Lot, for waiting on an arrival.

All CLT parking facilities are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The rules worth knowing

• 15-minute grace period on entry for every product except Valet.
• Booked online? You get a two-hour grace period either side of your scheduled entry and exit.
• Valet must be booked at least three hours ahead.
• You can leave a car for up to 30 days without telling anyone. Longer than that, call parking first.
• Run late coming home and you are still let out — an overstay fee at the drive-up rate is added automatically when you scan at the exit.

Shuttles

Free, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every 10 to 15 minutes depending on traffic.

After 11 p.m., phone ahead. The airport asks travellers to call CLT Parking to make sure a shuttle is available for them that late. If you land at midnight and walk out to a long-term lot shelter expecting a bus, that is the sentence you wish you had read.

Shelters are in Long Term Lots 1 and 2, between the Daily Decks, and at Express Deck Preferred. Coming back, every shuttle boards outside Arrivals/Baggage Claim on the inner lanes.

Dropping off and picking up

Curbside is for immediate loading and unloading only — you cannot wait there or leave the car. If you are meeting someone, use the free Cell Phone Lot or the Hourly Deck.

With a lot of luggage and several people, the airport's own advice is to drop passengers and bags at the upper level (Departures/Ticketing) first, then go and park.

Accessible parking

CLT states that accessible parking is available in all of its parking facilities and that accessible shuttles run continuously. There is a parking assistance line, and blue call boxes with an INFO button in every lot and deck.

When it will be busy

The airport names the peaks: Sundays, the days either side of holidays, Thursday, Friday and Sunday evenings, and Monday, Tuesday and Saturday mornings.

And the advice that sounds obvious until you need it — photograph the sign showing your level and row, or the shuttle shelter you walked from.

Eating

The airport records 78 places to eat. They are not evenly spread:

If you want something actually from Charlotte

Most airport food is the same anywhere. Some of this isn't:

• Midwood Smokehouse, Concourse B — the airport calls it "a casual outpost of the beloved Charlotte BBQ joint".
• Triple C Brewing, Concourse D — a tasting room from the Charlotte brewery.
• Hissho Sushi, Concourse D and the Atrium — described by the airport as a local Charlotte sushi provider.
• Rhino Market & Deli, Concourse A, and Great Wagon Road, a local whiskey bar, also Concourse A.
• The Waterman Fish Bar, Concourse C.
• Wicked Weed Brewing, The Plaza — Asheville rather than Charlotte, but North Carolina.
• Chalice Bar, Concourse D — for the view; the airport describes windows onto the Charlotte skyline, "especially stunning at night".

Before security, and in the middle of the night

Queen Charlotte's Kitchen is in the baggage claim area, before security — a full-service restaurant you can reach without a boarding pass. Useful if you are meeting a delayed flight.

Ciao Gourmet Market in Concourse D is 24/7. If you are stuck overnight airside, that is the one.

For a long layover, Minute Suites at the Atrium and The Plaza offer private suites inside security where you can nap, work or shower.

Everything else, by concourse

From the airport's own map data:

• Water refill stations — 19, across the Atrium, all five concourses and the D/E connector.
• Charging stations — Concourses C, D and E.
• Pet relief areas — the A Connector, Gate E36 and The Plaza.
• Mothers' rooms — four, at the same three locations plus one more.
• Free Wi-Fi throughout the terminal.

• The USO Lounge is on the third level of the Atrium, for US military members and their families.
• Gameway, a video game lounge, is in Concourse E.
• 35 public artworks are held at the airport — the largest concentration in the county's register. See public art in Charlotte.

Airline lounges: American Airlines Admirals Clubs in Concourses B and D, an Amex Centurion Lounge, a Delta Sky Club, and The Club CLT at the A Connector.
