Free, or nearly

Wednesday evening is the answer, if it is a Wednesday. The Mint Museum and the Bechtler are both free from 5 to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays and are a three-minute walk apart on South Tryon.

Thursday lunchtime works too. The free ArtBreak tour runs at noon, rotating: first Thursdays at the Gantt Center, second at the Bechtler, third at Mint Uptown, fourth at Mint Randolph. Drop in, no booking.

McColl Center on North Tryon is free every day it opens, with a suggested donation.

The library. Twenty-three branches, all free, all warm. ImaginOn on East Seventh is a library and children's theatre in one building and is the obvious wet-afternoon answer with children. Main Library on North Tryon is closed for construction — check the library's locations page before you set off.

Swimming, indoors

The county records six aquatic centres: Ray's Splash Planet, the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center, Double Oaks Family Aquatic Center, Marion Diehl Recreation Center & Pool, Eastway Regional Recreation Center, and Northern Regional Recreation Center in Cornelius.

These are programmed facilities with timetables and admission rather than fixed opening hours — check the county's schedule rather than turning up.

Recreation centres: the underused option

The county records an indoor gym at 39 sites. That is a lot of warm, dry, county-run floor space, and almost nobody thinks of it when it rains. Charlotte sites include Albemarle Road, Arbor Glen, Berewick, Bette Rae Thomas, Eastway Regional, Elon, Hawthorne, Hickory Grove, Ivory-Baker and Knights View.

Six more are school gymnasiums in Huntersville, run in partnership with the county — an arrangement that exists nowhere in any published guide.

Indoor pavilions, for when it is damp rather than pouring

Sixteen parks have a covered indoor pavilion — shelter without being shut in. In Charlotte: Freedom Park, First Ward Park, Cordelia Park, Veterans Park, Hornets Nest Park, Reedy Creek Park, Marion Diehl Park, Colonel Francis J. Beatty Park and William R. Davie Park. Outside the city: Jetton Park in Cornelius, Beaty Park in Davidson, Dellwood Center and Rural Hill Nature Preserve in Huntersville, and The Hut in Pineville.

Nature centres — outdoors, indoors

Six environmental education centres, which is the rainy-day trick with children who want to be outside: Discovery Place Nature Museum, McDowell Nature Center, Reedy Creek Nature Center and Quest at Latta Nature Preserve, plus Stevens Creek Nature Center in Mint Hill and Beaty Park in Davidson. The Carolina Raptor Center in Huntersville is recorded as an interpretive facility.

Museums that charge

Harvey B. Gantt Center, Charlotte Museum of History and the NASCAR Hall of Fame all charge admission, and all are indoors for an afternoon. The Charlotte Museum of History admits under-fours free; the Gantt admits under-fives free.

Further afield, still dry

The N.C. Transportation Museum at Spencer has large indoor exhibit halls in a former railway roundhouse, and the Schiele Museum in Gastonia has a planetarium. See day trips from Charlotte.

What we have not covered

Trampoline parks, soft play, indoor climbing and bowling. They come up when people search for this and we have not researched any of them. We would rather say so than list places we have not checked.
