Before you go: the rules, and the hours trap

Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation states that its dog parks are open daily from 7:30 a.m. to sunset. That matters, because the county records general park hours as "Daylight" — so the park can be open before the dog park is. An early walk does not mean an early off-leash run.

The county also states:

  • Dog owners must follow all posted dog park rules.
  • Dogs must maintain current vaccinations — rabies (with tag number), DHLPP and Bordetella — to use the off-leash areas.
  • No children under the age of 12 are allowed in dog parks.

Check the county's current dog park guidance before a first visit — rules and hours are the kind of thing that changes without anyone announcing it.

What we can and cannot tell you about each one

The county records that a park has a dog park. It does not publish, in that record, whether the area is fenced, whether large and small dogs are separated, whether there is water, shade or a double gate. We have not visited them, so we do not say. Where that matters to you — a nervous dog, a small dog, a hot afternoon — it is worth a look at the site before you commit to the drive.

Parking space counts below are the county's own recorded figures for the whole park, not for the dog park area.

Two honest notes

Ninth Street Park and Purser-Hulsey Park record a dog park and nothing else. In the county's data those sites carry no playground, no restroom, no shelter — the dog park is the facility. Ninth Street Park additionally has no parking recorded, so it is a walk-to site.

Enderly Park also has no parking recorded, despite having a playground, basketball, pickleball and a shelter. Treat it as a neighbourhood park reached on foot.

Places that say dogs are welcome

Every entry here is the business describing its own premises. We have not visited, and a patio policy is not a promise about any particular day — if it matters, ring ahead.

  • Pizza Baby answers the question directly on its own site: "Well behaved and leashed dogs are always welcome."
  • Tremont"a dog-friendly covered patio on the Rail Trail."
  • Goldies, 3601 South Blvd in Lower South End — "our dog-friendly front and back patios."
  • Chapter Six, South End, near the Rail Trail — "our covered, pet-friendly patio."
  • Tupelo Honey lists Pet-Friendly among its features: "Furry friends are welcome on the patio."
  • Another Broken Egg Cafe, Ballantyne — lists a "Pet Friendly Patio."

That is the whole list, and it is short on purpose. Plenty of other Charlotte venues welcome dogs. These are the ones that say so themselves, in writing, where we could check it. A guide that listed fifty would be guessing about forty-four of them.

We have no dog-friendly hotels. It is the thing people ask about most after the parks, and we would rather leave a gap than fill it from a booking site.

Dogs elsewhere

On greenways and in parks generally, dogs must be on a leash of six feet or shorter, must be kept to the right of the path, are not allowed in playgrounds or athletic field areas, and owners must pick up after them. Those rules are county-wide and are not suspended anywhere except inside a marked off-leash area. See where to park for a greenway walk.
