Plan a visit to Freedom Park

Choose Freedom Park for a playground visit, a sports activity or a walk linked to the greenway. The county's record lists playgrounds and a Play 60 area, tennis and pickleball, ball fields, walking trails, greenway access, fishing and restrooms. It also lists picnic facilities and an amphitheater. [source]

For a short outing, choose one part of the park before adding a longer walk. For a gathering, check the county's current reservation arrangements rather than assuming a recorded picnic shelter is available for your date.

Parking and facilities

The county's September 2026 record gives 2435 Cumberland Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28203, and records 401 parking spaces. [source] That is recorded capacity, not a guarantee of a space or the number available during an event. Use the entrance appropriate to your activity and check any temporary directions before leaving.

For a particular amenity, confirm current operation with Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation. The park inventory does not establish today's equipment condition, access needs or facility availability.

A longer greenway walk

The researched Little Sugar Creek segment is 3.9 miles one way between Brandywine Road and 7th Street, and names Freedom Park along the corridor. [source] That distance starts at Brandywine Road; it is not the distance from every entrance in Freedom Park to Uptown.

Choose your own start, turn-around point and return plan. Use the greenway map and greenway parking guide for access points. The Trail of History offers another way to explore the same wider greenway corridor.

Festival in the Park

The organizer says Festival in the Park began in 1964 and describes the event around Freedom Park's lake. [source] For an event visit, check the festival's current page and event parking directions. Festival arrangements can differ from an ordinary park visit, including rules for pets and drop-off. [source]

The nature museum next door

The Charlotte Museum of Nature's site describes ongoing construction at 1658 Sterling Road, on the original Discovery Place Nature site. [source] Check its current update before planning a museum visit. An outdoor day in Freedom Park and admission to the new museum are separate plans.

For an indoor science option, use Discovery Place Science in Uptown. For more nearby context, read Dilworth and Myers Park.
