What we established, and from where
In 1904, Daniel A. Tompkins proposed developing the park on the former municipal waterworks site; city officials chose the name Independence Park that October.

The Park and Tree Commission selected John Nolen to design Independence Park, and he came to Charlotte in 1905 to supervise implementation of his plan.
