Day trips from Charlotte

Two things to read before you drive anywhere.

State park gates close, and the time changes every month. These are not places that stay open after dark. In winter several close at six or seven in the evening. Every park publishes a month-by-month table — check it for the month you are going, not the month you last went.

Closures are widespread in the western parks right now. On the day we checked, South Mountains had its waterfall trail closed entirely, Chimney Rock had the only car park for Eagle Rock closed, Grandfather Mountain had most of the mountain closed for recovery work, and Stone Mountain had part of its loop trail shut. These change constantly. Check the park's own alerts page the morning you go — it is a ninety-minute drive to find out the hard way.

We give you the place and what is there. We do not give drive times, because we have not measured them and a straight-line distance would mislead you in mountain country.

Closest: under an hour by the park service's own reckoning

Crowders Mountain State Park — Gaston County

"32 miles west of Charlotte", in the park service's words. Two peaks with views over the Piedmont, and the serious climbing and bouldering destination nearest the city.

The detail worth knowing: its Ridgeline Trail connects to Kings Mountain National Military Park and Kings Mountain State Park in South Carolina — you can walk from one state into another. 522 Park Office Lane, Kings Mountain · 980-460-8042

President James K. Polk State Historic Site — Pineville

The reconstructed birthplace site of the eleventh president, just inside Mecklenburg County. Tuesday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Reed Gold Mine — Midland, Cabarrus County

The site of the first documented gold find in the United States. Admission is free; guided underground tours and gold panning are charged. Tuesday to Saturday. See also Charlotte's gold rush.

An hour or so: lakes, a mountain, a fort, a roundhouse

Lake Norman State Park — Iredell County

"40 miles north of Charlotte." The mountain biking destination: the Itusi Trail system runs nearly 31 miles of single-track. Lake Norman is the largest man-made lake in the state and the park holds about 17 miles of its northern shore. A separate Park Lake sits behind a dam for quiet fishing and paddling. Morrow Mountain State Park — Stanly County

"50 miles northeast of Charlotte." A summit, the Yadkin River State Trail and the shore of Lake Tillery. Geologically interesting in a way that shows: Native American artefacts here are made of rhyodacite, and the Civilian Conservation Corps quarried argillite on site to build much of the park. Fort Dobbs State Historic Site — Statesville, Iredell County

A French and Indian War frontier fort site. The grounds and visitor centre are free; guided tours are charged. Tuesday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 438 Fort Dobbs Road, Statesville

N.C. Transportation Museum — Spencer, Rowan County

A 60-acre site that was Southern Railway's largest servicing facility between Washington, D.C. and Atlanta. Seasonal train rides, hands-on exhibits, and Barber Junction Depot — a real 1898 station, moved here, now the visitor entrance. Schiele Museum of Natural History — Gastonia, Gaston County

Free to everyone on the second Tuesday of each month, 4–8 p.m. Planetarium shows charged separately. See free things to do.

Further, and worth the drive

Stone Mountain State Park — Wilkes County

A 600-foot granite dome, designated a National Natural Landmark, with the restored mid-nineteenth-century Hutchinson Homestead at its base. Climbing, waterfalls, fishing, riding. Part of the loop trail is currently closed and upper parking is limited — check before you go. 3042 Frank Parkway, Roaring Gap · 336-957-8185

Pilot Mountain State Park — Surry and Yadkin counties

"20 miles northwest of Winston-Salem." The knob you can see from the interstate. Two separate sections — the mountain and the Yadkin River — and the Mountains-to-Sea State Trail crosses both. 1721 Pilot Knob Park Road, Pinnacle · 336-444-5100

Hanging Rock State Park — Stokes County

"30 miles north of Winston-Salem." Another Civilian Conservation Corps park, and the one with the longest list of things to do of any in this set: hiking, a swimming lake, paddling, boating, fishing, climbing, riding, mountain biking and waterfalls. Lake James State Park — Burke and McDowell counties

"50 miles northeast of Asheville." Two separate accesses onto the lake. The distinctive bit: some campsites are reachable only by paddling to them. 2229 Lake James State Park Road, Nebo · 828-544-6800

Mount Mitchell State Park — Yancey County

The highest peak east of the Mississippi. The summit restaurant closes for the season — check what is open before counting on lunch. 2388 N.C. 128, Burnsville · 828-867-4000

South Mountains and Chimney Rock

Both are outstanding and both have significant closures at the time of writing — South Mountains' waterfall trail is shut entirely and Chimney Rock's Eagle Rock parking is closed. We are not going to describe walks you may not be able to do. Check their alert pages; when they reopen they are worth it.

Grandfather Mountain State Park — Avery County

Largely closed for recovery work, with only the upper trail, campsite and car park open at the time of writing. Check before you plan anything around it.

Going by train

Charlotte has a station and North Carolina runs its own passenger services, which makes a genuine car-free day trip possible — something almost nothing else in the region offers. Services and schedules change, and there were engineering works affecting schedules when we checked, so start at NC By Train rather than trusting anything we could print here.

What we have not covered

Beaches and South Carolina. Both come up constantly when people search for day trips from Charlotte and we have researched neither. Rather than pad this page with places we have not checked, we have left them out and said so.
