What is actually here

Mecklenburg County lists three independent sections — and the word is theirs, so do not expect one continuous walk:

• 2.7 miles from State Street to Cedar Street, with a connection to Freedom Drive
• 1.7 miles from West Boulevard to Clanton Road
• 1.0 mile of Stewart Tributary Greenway, Lakewood Avenue to Yellowstone Drive

The Stewart Creek Greenway section is 2.9 paved miles following the creek, with a wetland and overlooks for watching wildlife. Access points are at Yellowstone Drive, Coronet Way, Norwood Drive and Lakewood Avenue, and the underpass at Parkway Avenue carries a mural celebrating Charlotte's west side.

A shorter Carolina Thread Trail segment of 0.7 miles, part paved and part gravel, sits within a wider network connecting Uptown Charlotte, Frazier Park, Ray's Splash Planet, Wesley Heights, Bruns Avenue Elementary School, Seversville Park and the Phillip O. Berry Recreation Center.

To reach it from the other side of the city, the Brooklyn Village Avenue sidewalk connector runs 1.6 miles along the edge of Uptown, linking Little Sugar Creek Greenway to Wesley Heights Greenway and from there into the Irwin and Stewart Creek system.

Be realistic about the practicalities

• Parking is thin. One Thread Trail segment records twelve spaces; the Brooklyn Village Avenue connector has street parking only.
• No restrooms are recorded on any of these sections.
• The sections are independent, so plan the specific stretch you want rather than assuming a through-route.
• Surfaces vary between paved, sidewalk and gravel depending on the section.

Making a half-day of it

Ray's Splash Planet, a county indoor water park, and Frazier Park sit on this network — which makes this one of the few greenway outings in Charlotte that works as a family day rather than just a walk. Wesley Heights itself is a National Register historic district with Bungalow, Colonial Revival and Tudor Revival housing, designed with Louis Asbury among its architects, and 1911 recorded as a significant year.
