Buying alcohol on Sunday
ABC stores are closed all day
North Carolina ABC stores must close on Sundays, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. They also cannot sell between 9 p.m. and 9 a.m. on other days; local boards set their operating hours within those limits. If you want to buy a bottle of spirits from an ABC store for Sunday, buy it by Saturday. Grocery and convenience stores are not substitutes for ordinary ABC-store spirits sales. Beer and wine are a different category, discussed below. The NC ABC Commission's guidance explains the state's retail system.
A qualifying distillery is an exception
“ABC stores are closed” does not mean every lawful spirits sale is prohibited on Sunday. Under G.S. 18B-1105(a)(4), qualifying North Carolina distilleries can sell their own spirits in closed containers to visitors who tour the distillery, subject to the statute's location and other conditions. Beer, wine and brunch drinks
For ordinary licensed-premises sales, North Carolina's Sunday-morning default is noon, with authorized local options allowing an earlier start. Cities and counties can adopt 10 a.m. Sunday sales; a Charlotte postal address is not enough to identify the governing jurisdiction. State Sunday-hours rule · City authority · County authority
Charlotte adopted the 10 a.m. option. Ordinance 9139, adopted July 24, 2017, authorizes permitted beer, wine and mixed-beverage sales on licensed premises inside the city's corporate limits from 10 a.m. Sunday. That covers the morning start time for permitted grocery-store beer and wine purchases as well as a restaurant's brunch drinks; it does not give every business permission to sell every type of alcohol. The NC ABC Commission's Early Sunday Sales Report, checked October 4, 2026, also marks Mecklenburg County, Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville, Matthews, Mint Hill and Pineville as approved for early Sunday sales. Leaving Charlotte city limits does not automatically mean waiting until noon. For an address elsewhere in North Carolina, check the applicable city or county rule rather than carrying Charlotte's rule with you.
A legal start time is not a promise that a shop or restaurant opens or serves at that time. For a Sunday meal, check the restaurant's Sunday kitchen hours, reservations and alcohol service separately. For an outing without drinking, use alcohol-free Charlotte.
Worship and prayer
Use places of worship in Charlotte to find organizations by tradition, and where to pray for practical prayer-space information. Then confirm the specific congregation or facility's current service, language, visitor and access arrangements. A directory entry is not a promise that a building is open whenever you arrive.

A Sunday outdoors
A park or greenway can make a flexible Sunday plan, but outdoor spaces still have hours, gates, closures and facility rules. Choose a manageable route and check access before travelling.

County dog parks publish daily hours of 7:30 a.m. to sunset. Their rules require current rabies, DHLPP and Bordetella vaccinations, and do not allow children under 12. Museums, libraries and attractions
Do not assume a weekday schedule applies on Sunday, or that every branch or attraction follows the same pattern. Start with Charlotte's attractions or the library guide, then open the chosen location's current official page.
Check opening time, last entry, any ticketed program and parking as one plan. A place can be open while a particular exhibition, children's activity or room is unavailable. For a low-cost option, compare free things to do; for wet weather, use rainy-day Charlotte.
A quieter kind of Sunday
For a self-directed history outing, consider Elmwood, Pinewood and the Potter's Field, the Uptown architecture walk or Charlotte's lost places. Check access and daylight, respect burial grounds and private property, and remember that a historical location does not necessarily have a building you can enter.

Quick answers
Can I buy a bottle of liquor at an ABC store on Sunday? No. ABC stores close all day. A qualifying distillery's own-product sales are a separate, conditional exception; see the section above.
Can I buy grocery-store wine at 9 a.m. Sunday in Charlotte? Not under the city's ordinary 10 a.m. Sunday-sales option. At or after 10 a.m., the shop must still be open and hold the appropriate permit.
Can I order a brunch cocktail at 10:30 a.m.? Inside Charlotte, the legal Sunday start time permits appropriately licensed sales from 10 a.m.; the restaurant's own service arrangements may be later.
Does the rule become noon outside Charlotte? Not automatically. The Commission also lists Mecklenburg County and the nearby towns named above as early-Sunday approved. Check the actual jurisdiction elsewhere.
Are all outdoor spaces always open? No. Check the park, trail, entrance and parking rules, plus closure notices.
