Sunday in Charlotte

There are a few facts about a Sunday in Charlotte that catch people out — mostly visitors, but newcomers too, and some of them are written into state law rather than into anybody's opening hours. Those are worth knowing once. Everything else on this page is a link to the organisation that actually knows.

The alcohol rules, which surprise almost everyone

North Carolina runs a state alcohol system, and it works differently from most places people arrive from.

Liquor is only sold in ABC stores

The NC ABC Commission is clear about this: spirituous liquor may only be sold in local ABC stores, or by the drink in a mixed-beverage outlet, or by a North Carolina distillery selling its own products at the distillery.

Not in supermarkets. Not in convenience stores. If you are looking for a bottle of gin, you are looking for an ABC store.

In this county those stores are run by the Mecklenburg County ABC Board.

And ABC stores are closed on Sunday

This is a statewide rule, not a local choice:

ABC stores shall not be open between 9:00 p.m. and 9:00 a.m. or on Sundays.

They are also closed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Local boards decide their other hours and closures within those limits.

So: if you want a bottle of spirits for Sunday, buy it on Saturday. That is the single most useful sentence on this page.

Sunday morning service on licensed premises

Beer, wine and mixed drinks in bars and restaurants are governed by state statute. Under G.S. 18B-1004(c), it is unlawful to sell or consume alcoholic beverages on licensed premises on Sunday morning until 12:00 noon — unless a local authority has used a specific statutory option.

That option is G.S. 160A-205.3, enacted in 2017, which lets a city adopt an ordinance allowing Sunday sales from 10:00 a.m.

Charlotte has adopted it. Charlotte City Code section 6-591 provides that, in accordance with G.S. 18B-1004 and 160A-205.3, it is lawful on any licensed premises "located in the corporate limits of the City of Charlotte" to sell malt beverages, unfortified wine, fortified wine and mixed beverages "beginning at 10:00 A.M. on Sunday". The section comes from Ordinance No. 9139, adopted 24 July 2017.

Two limits worth knowing.

• It applies to the corporate limits of the City of Charlotte. A restaurant with a Charlotte postal address is not necessarily inside them, and the surrounding towns each need their own ordinance — which we have not checked town by town.
• It changes Sunday morning only. Nothing else about the state's alcohol rules moves.

So in the city, 10:00 a.m. is the earliest Sunday service is legally possible. Outside it, assume the statutory default of noon unless you know otherwise.

Curiously, Charlotte's code has no chapter on alcoholic beverages at all. Section 6-591 sits by itself in Chapter 6, Article XIII ("Miscellaneous") and is the entirety of the city's codified Sunday alcohol provision.

Individual park and facility hours are published by Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation and we link rather than copy them. One specific rule worth knowing if you have a dog: county dog parks are open daily from 7:30am to sunset, and have vaccination and age requirements.

A quieter kind of Sunday

If you want somewhere to walk that is neither a park nor a shop, Charlotte's historic burial grounds are open ground in the middle of the city and hold a remarkable amount of its history — including some of the parts the city found hardest to face.
